“If you’re wise, this ain’t the song for you”. Luckily, these are the words of the innovative indie-folk duo BlueByrd themselves, not of the reviewer! Because, if you like your music melodically pure yet cynically lyrical then Song for the Duped definitely IS the song to lend your ears to.
This “pretty ditty” is, in fact, deeply witty and bordering on gritty – offering us dark pearls of wisdom such as “sincerity’s the myth you’ll never see”.
Chris Rowley’s voice cuts cleanly through the skilfully uncluttered accompaniment. This allows the thought-provoking lyrics to deliver their damning critique of society with a perfect punch. After one listen, you are humming along with the catchy melody. By the end of the second, you are singing along to the chorus. And you’re pulled back to listen a third time as this seemingly timeless earworm buries itself into the dark recesses of your brain and sets up home.
“Song for the Duped” is the anti-optimist anthem for the Brexit generation and deserves a following of avid addicts chanting it in drunken doldrums up and down the country.
Inspired by the Songwall principle of fair trade music, BlueByrd have released “Song for the Duped” EXCLUSIVELY to Songwall until the 25thNovember. This means you can be one of the first to listen to and download the song – putting money right into the pockets of the artists.
Well known around the West Midlands, BlueByrd are also no stranger to Songwall, having won the opportunity to headline at our unique ‘Songs in the Sky’ event atop Birmingham’s Rotunda this August. Speaking about the event, they told us:
“There was a genuine warmth from the Songwall audience. It felt like our songs made a real connection with people there, as though we were all sharing something special. A real sense of togetherness.”
These sentiments were certainly reciprocated by the audience, as expressed in our review of the previous event.
Encouraging other unsigned artists to enter the current competition to win a performance slot at ‘Songs in the Sky’, the duo expressed:
“The competition was easy to enter and our fans really got behind us, voting to help us win. The prize of a paid opportunity to play to a select audience and then stay in the suite was fantastic.”
The next exclusive ‘Songs in the Sky’ event will be held on 28th November. The competition is now open for artists who want to win a paid performance opportunity and a night in a penthouse suite at the Rotunda in Birmingham’s vibrant city centre. If you think you can fill BlueByrd’s indie-folk shoes and follow in their footsteps as a ‘Songs in the Sky’ winner then enter now.
