The Transformers needed Optimus Prime. The Night’s Watch needed Jon Snow. Every team needs a leader and Songwall is no exception.
On 24th August, Songwall founder Brendan Poynton will headline the first Songwall Sessions at Cogs Bar in Birmingham! We caught up with our very own “Lord Commander of the Wall” to find out more about him, his music and his thoughts about the Songwall Sessions…
So, Brendan, just one week to go until Songwall Sessions at Cogs Bar!
What are you most looking forward to about performing?
It’s been a long time since I’ve performed a full set of songs on stage. It will be good to lose myself in the feeling of expression and connecting with the audience.
Tell us a bit about yourself – how did you find music?
I’m a human being trying to realise my potential and live a rewarding and self-sustaining life, whilst at the same time helping others. Music isn’t something you find, more a part of our existence – it’s the vibration of life!
Describe what music means to you in 5 words or less.
The sun and the moon.
Who or what are your biggest inspirations?
Travelling, meeting people and being in the natural environment is when I feel most inspired. Inspirations can come from the unexpected (places and people.)
What is the one piece of advice you would give your younger self about creating and sharing music?
Value it, protect it, don’t deny your instinct and follow your passion.
What is the song, by any artist, which best describes your journey in life and music so far?
You can describe my music and my journey with three words – “Bitter Sweet Symphony” (The Verve).
If you could only listen to one artist for the rest of your life, who would it be?
(laughs)….I think that would be a nightmare scenario!
You’re going to be performing a 40 minute set at Songwall Sessions. What’s your favourite song in your set?
That’s a difficult question because it can change from time to time! I have one favourite, maybe I’ll tell you at the gig! I’m happy with the whole set I’m performing right now.
What opportunities or challenges does today’s climate present to new artists?
I think it’s unmapped territory and as an artist in today’s climate you can create your own path if you put your mind to it. The problem with that is there are so many complications and pitfalls to manage so I think you still need help and support and I like to think that’s what Songwall will create. A support system and platform that isn’t there to rip you off and gives you solid benefits.
How did you come to form Songwall and why should other artists join?
It’s a long story! But aside from that, for a long time, I have felt that artists have been coerced into giving out their music for free with platforms such as Soundcloud. They often have to sacrifice artistic integrity for commercial success. I feel that that there is an amazing opportunity for something new to exist, which provides a more rounded artist experience and allows us to make a living. Songwall is about connecting artists with fans who value original music, are looking for something really authentic and new, and who share a fair-trade ethos to the creation and consumption of art. That is essentially what Songwall is all about. Trying to create a meeting place for songwriters crafting their art, with people who simply love exploring original music and want to discover the great new songs of the future. If you want to be valued as an artist, this is the place to be. I’d encourage like-minded artists to join our growing community at this early stage and register with Songwall for free.
Finally, tell everyone why they should come along and hear you play at Cogs Bar on 24th August!
I’m really excited to say that I will be performing alongside Ella Joy. Ella embodies the spirit of Songwall. She’s an unsigned young artist who is authentic, hugely talented and uncompromising in her artistic vision. I know she will mesmerise you with her ethereal voice, haunting songs and charisma. Come and see her in this intimate venue whilst you can!
